One of the most exciting accomplishments of early childhood is language acquisition. The focus of research in our laboratory is to describe the events in infancy that prepare the child for this extraordinary event, and to attempt to explain the developmental mechanisms that make it possible. We take an interdisciplinary approach using behavioral techniques focusing on the period from birth to the end of the third year of life. The developmental work is complemented by studies with adults and people learning a second language.
