In this workshop, we will discuss the measurement of
adult attachment using Bartholomew's four-category model
(Bartholomew & Horowitz, 1991). The two self-report
measures commonly used in our work will be described.
We will address the conceptual and statistical problems
with self-report categorical data, the advantages of
continuous over categorical self-report methods, and the
advantages of multiple methods of assessment. We will
also discuss our interview assessment of adult attachment
and outline the advantages and disadvantages of using an
interview assessment of attachment. Finally, workshop
participants will have the opportunity to discuss the
prototypic characteristics of the four attachment patterns in
small working groups.
