Conference Site and Facilities
The convention will be held in The Banff Centre, located in the town of Banff, in the Canadian Rockies, one of the world's most beautiful settings. The Banff Centre is comprised of The Banff Centre for Conferences, The Banff Centre for Management, and The Banff Centre for the Arts. ICPR 96 will be located in The Banff Centre for Conferences, which in addition to meeting rooms, features on campus accommodation, meal and recreational facilities (The Sally Borden Recreational Facility), and banquet rooms. The Sally Borden Building houses a variety of recreational facilities including a 25-metre pool, saunas and whirlpool, full-size gymnasium with indoor running track, tennis, badminton, racquetball and squash courts, and an exercise room.
Delegates will share the Centre
facilities with poets, musicians, artists, and opera singers of The
Banff Centre for the Arts, making for a creative and pleasant
atmosphere. Off-campus recreational options for delegates include guided mountain
walks, hot spring bathing, swimming, tennis, golf (at the nearby Banff
Springs Hotel and Golf Course), horse back riding, hiking, canoeing, biking, and fishing.
Banff is located in Banff National Park. The whole
National Mountain Park region, some 130, 312 SqKm (78,187 SqMi) is a
family-type vacation/recreation area, visited by some four million
tourists each year. About half of the tourists go to Banff for skiing
(January to April), and the other half participate in summer
activities (May-October).
Here is a picture (512K) of the Banff Centre.
If you would like to check the weather in Banff now, check the Banff Centre Cam for a "live" image from The Banff Centre. Of course you will only see something if it is daylight in Banff!

Accommodation
Please do not submit accomodation requests on the internet! Conference materials, including applications for accommodation, were mailed March 18 and 19 to ISSPR members and anyone whose conference submission was accepted. If you are not part of either of these groups and would be interested in attending the conference, submit a request to icprconf@ucalgary.ca for conference materials.
* Unless otherwise noted all dollar amounts are in Canadian funds.
Rooms have been reserved at The Banff Centre and The Banff YWCA. It takes 20 minutes to walk and 5 minutes to drive from the Banff YWCA to The Banff Centre. All accommodation will be assigned on a first-come-first-served basis, with priority given to those presenting at the
conference and priority for the most inexpensive accommodation given to students who wish it. Single accommodation is particularly limited (we only have 32 single rooms) so that most delegates will be sharing accommodation. Given the unexpected large number of submissions, please be advised that if you wish to take advantage of the accommodation reserved for ICPR, submit your accommodation request early. Alternative accommodation in Banff will be very difficult to find and very expensive as the conference is being held during peak tourist season in one of the premier resort destinations in the world.
Banff Centre Rates
Accommodation fees at The Banff Centre include accommodation, full meal package, nutritional breaks, gratuities, access to the Sally Borden Recreation Facility (25 metre pool, weight room, aerobic studio, 1 squash court, and 1 racquetball court), and parking. Off-campus accommodation
Hotel bookings in Banff can be made through a general booking service (1-800-661-1676) for a non-refundable fee of $50. Delegates should know
that seven moderately priced Banff hotels contacted March 12, were all fully booked for the August 4 - 8 period.
Look here for some on-line accommodations information (via Vertex Communications).
Accommodation in Calgary Saturday August 3

reserved rooms at the Village Park Inn for the special rate of $75. Taxi service from the airport to this hotel is $6 and ICPR shuttle service will be
available from this hotel. If you wish to take advantage of this accommodation contact Susan Boon in Calgary (see below). In addition, as of
March 12, the following downtown Calgary hotels had accommodation available (all accessible by the Airporter Bus):

be required to register at the Front Office where they will receive the same "passport" as on-campus delegates.

Tourist Information
Although most delegates will arrive in Calgary and simply take the
ICPR Shuttle to Banff, there are two other interesting alternatives that would add some spectacular sightseeing en route:
Arrive in Vancouver and take the Via Rail scenic train to Banff.
For specific information Ph: 1-800-561-8630, or write to Great
Canadian Railtour, 340 Brooksbank Ave, North Vancouver, BC, Canada,
V7J2C1. In the USA, Via Rail can be booked through AMTRAK. Look here for on-line information about the Rocky Mountain Rail Tour, or go here for Via Rail, or here for AMTRAK.
With a rental car you can go on a self-directed tour from Calgary
to Edmonton, to Jasper, and to Banff. To do this at a reasonably
leisurely pace requires 4 to 5 days. The drive from Jasper to Banff
is spectacular. There are convenient accommodations and innumerable
restaurants in Edmonton, Jasper, and Banff.
All manner of Alberta tourist information-maps, accommodations,
restaurants, tours, etc., can be obtained from Alberta Tourism.
Ph: 1-800-661-8888; or write Alberta Tourism, Box, 2500,
Edmonton Alberta, Canada, T5J4L6.
More information on travel within Canada can be found on-line:
